Well done July 25, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Can a woman really decide between two loves? How do you control the feelings in your heart? That's the subject of this book, and it is handled wonderfully throughout. Ellen deals with some very difficult emotions in this book and how she chooses to deal with them, or not deal with them, make up the bulk of the story. Through it all, we get to see the difference between knowing what is right, and living what is right.
This book can be either a really simple or really rich story, depending on how you read it. I really like that about it, like it can be appreciated on different levels. I would love to see this made into a movie someday!
On a personal note, I just want to say that not all Grahams are snobs!
Not her best, but still very good June 16, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've now read all of Emily Giffin's books and, while this one wasn't my favorite (not quite up there with the fabulous Baby Proof), it's still very good and certainly much better than most books out there. I found the characters to be extremely relatable and felt the pull between Leo and Andy very convincingly. I even got a bit teary towards the book's penultimate scene in Leo's apartment, when Ellen has to make her final choice. I thought there were a lot of real, hard truths about love and commitment that come out in that particular chapter.
My main criticism with the book is that the ending is, as others have mentioned, somewhat predictable and a bit syrupy. However, I did feel the epilogue provided a very fitting conclusion to this tale of two loves. Emily Giffin is a fantastic writer and I look forward to her next book.
Authentic romantic fairy tale May 29, 2008 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Is that an oxymoron? To say that a romantic fairy tale can be authentic? Maybe, but Emily Giffin manages to pull it off with style in this book, a satisfying and highly entertaining story that rings true in pretty much every way. I mean, who doesn't think about a significant ex from time to time? What if they came back? What if, despite everything, you discover that you can't help having feelings for them? What do you do?
It's really fun to follow Ellen as she deals with these questions, and Giffin takes you on an emotional journey about love, dealing with the past and what it means to honor your commitments to your partner and yourself. Toss is some interesting background stories about the main character's dissolving family and the challenges of finding a place in a new city and a new life, and you have the ingredients for a great book!
I loved this book. And I'm not just saying this because I share the same last name as the main character!
Lots of fun! July 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First Emily Giffin book I have ever read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read it in three sittings and really loved Ellen's story, especially how she came to her final decision. I love how Leo is all intangible attraction and his mysterious pull on Ellen's heart. Don't we all have those people in our lives who we're inexplicably drawn to? So which is love then? The ones we choose for ourselves or the ones we can't help but want to be with? This book answers that question beautifully.
Awesome July 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great book! The story was fluid and well constructed and the main character very real and relatable. I thought the author did a good job of turning a conventional love story plot into something more substantial, and her observations on love as something other than some sappy force of passion were unique (esp. to these "chick" type of books). I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
